Whilst many humans are sure to be happy to see the back of 2021, the same can’t always be said for our dogs, especially when the ball drops and the fireworks fly!

Regardless whether you are planning a party or just having a quiet night in, there is plenty you can do to keep your dogs happy and midnight rolls around

Take your dog for their usual walk, or even go a bit further, to give them the best chance of sleeping through the occasion, but try and have it completed before dusk - just in case the fireworks get started early. Make sure your garden is secure, and their tag is up to date, just in case.

Feed your dog at their usual time - but make the evening extra special for them by offering a bonus, tasty treat. A long lasting chew is sure to get their tail wagging, and helps to reinforce a calm state of mind when the festivities start up.

Like us, some dogs just don’t like a late night - and whilst there’s no need for you to be in bed by your usual time - make sure your dog has access to a quiet sleeping spot, ideally where they would usually snooze overnight.

If you are having a get together for the night, let your dog take the lead! Some dogs don’t like the party atmosphere, so give them a quiet room of their own to escape to. On the other hand, if the idea of a good time for your dog is to be mingling amongst the guests, there’s no need to keep them away.

As covered in our Christmas blog, (see above!) there are plenty of food and drinks that just aren’t good for your four legged friends. So treat them to their own instead! If you are enjoying a special drink to bring in the new year, there are dog friendly alternatives available from pet stores to include your canine.

Whilst the late night (and festivities) might mean you fancy a lie in on the 1st January, your dog unfortunately can’t read a calendar! Make sure breakfast and the first toilet opportunity of the day is at their usual time - once your dog is comfortable feel free to head back to bed!
